Across India, rural schools face significant challenges in incorporating new STEM education topics into their learning. In recognition that STEM fields are crucial for the growth and development of India’s future, there is a growing emphasis on educating the next generation in areas such as space exploration, robotics, aviation, and artificial intelligence.
However, many bright minds of India, located in the rural parts of the country, cannot access new STEM education. Specifically, their schools neither have access to the relevant content nor the availability of qualified teachers to provide the education. For the children aiming for prestigious institutions such as the IITs, lack of exposure to these STEM topics places them at a huge disadvantage compared to their urban or affluent counterparts. Hence, this inequality not only impacts the learning of a rural child but also thwarts the nation’s innovation and development in these strategic STEM domains.

Solution & Approach
Space-E-Fic, an innovative entity established by young passionate IIT Alumni, is addressing this education gap by providing tailor-made courses for young minds in middle and high schools. Space-E-Fic emphasizes educating these kids on new and relevant STEM topics such as space education, robotics, aviation, and artificial intelligence. Traditionally, these topics are taught to those in higher grades and colleges. However, Space-E-Fic is breaking this barrier by bringing this content to younger
minds so they can discover their talent and interest in these high-growth areas early on. They have invested in making these intuitive courses (typically with 10-16 modules) very interactive, providing opportunities for the kids to learn through DIY (Do It Yourself) projects and hands-on learning. Space-E-Fic has also developed simple and affordable kits to enable this interactive approach.
Technology/Innovation:
WHEELS has partnered with Ek-Tara, an organization that educates children from economically disadvantaged backgrounds in the slums of Kolkata. Ek-Tara’s learning center offers a quality and holistic education to kids. In partnership with Space-E-Fic, WHEELS has run pilot lessons in the learning center to see how the delivery of this content “Technology-enabled Philanthropy for Rural Transformation” can be scaled through its Spoken Tutorials platform. Spoken tutorials are typically 10 minutes in length and allow students and learners to learn through a self-learning mode without any dependence on a coach or tutor. Hence, they assist in scaling education delivery to a very large audience at minimal cost and unparalleled speed. To further enhance the scalability of this model, Space-E-Fic has created the Train-The-Trainer modules for Ek-Tara’s teachers on these new topics to enable localized self-delivery for future batches. This innovative process allows teachers to deliver content with minimal support from Space-E-Fic.

Building on the immense success already achieved in Ek-Tara’s learning center, Space-E-Fic and WHEELS are expanding this program to other parts of the country, thereby introducing Space-E-Fic’s innovative and scalable model to dozens of education entities.
Additionally, WHEELS and Space-E-Fic encourage IIT Alumni to harness their knowledge and connections to accelerate this expansion, bringing advanced STEM education to reach all parts of rural and underserved communities all over India.
Education being one of the focus areas of WHEELS, here is a request to WHEELS Global Foundation members and IIT Alumni to come forward and use their network to help scale the Education solutions so it can achieve its goals.
This could be in the form of spreading the awareness and usage of the solution catalyzing the network of educational institutions, identifying sources of value that may be integrated with Space-E-Fic to enhance the richness of its contents or any other means. With the upliftment of the education level of the students, in collaboration with Space-E-Fic, we can ensure knowledge dissemination and communication among the students based in the remotest part of the country.
