Of all the water that exists on our planet, around 97% is salt water. Of the 3% or so of fresh water available, almost half of it remains frozen in glaciers, ice caps, or deep underground aquifers. Yes – just around 1.5% is available for our use, making every drop count. Further, with continuing population growth and industrial growth, demand continues to escalate in a supply-constrained domain.

Economies around the world are largely profit-centric, often prioritizing financial growth over ecology. This perspective has led to a neglected view of environmental responsibility. As a result, India has seen increased water-related challenges, including plastic pollution, heavy metal contamination in water sources, and pollution from agricultural and industrial runoff. More than 239 million people across 151 districts in 13 states in India are exposed to arsenic-contaminated water, resulting in severe health issues, including skin cancer. Compounded by poor waste management, ineffective purification, and outdated recycling systems, the community lacks a stable source of clean drinking water. Without a sustainable and innovative solution, many communities will be stuck in a vicious cycle of water scarcity, climate crisis, and health degradation, impacting community well-being and livelihood.
To address the issue of contaminated water, WHEELS Global Foundation (along with its sister entity WIN Foundation) has joined forces with the Water Bank Foundation (with its pioneering BarterWATER Mission) to create an innovative and scalable model to provide arsenic-free, safe drinking water to Indian communities, followed by engaging them into the activities related to sustainable development, in exchange of Water Credits. The BarterWATER pilot addressed severe water quality issues in Indian states like Bihar, where numerous communities suffer from arsenic-contaminated water sources. Identified in 2004, the problem has persisted for years. However, in the past two decades, new water purification technologies such as WaterBank’s Organic Aqua Solutions (OAS) have been developed to remove harmful heavy metals, such as lead, mercury, and arsenic, from water sources. Integrated with the Tap@App IoT system, these water purifiers are equipped with water quality and flow control sensors, ensuring that the village’s drinking water meets basic standards for safety. BarterWATER’s mission is aligned with the vision of the United Nations decade for action agenda, “Water For Sustainable Development”, which prioritizes the well-being, hygiene, and sustainability of local communities.
BarterWATER established an innovative deployment model of bartering exchange via AI-powered digital currency – RAINBOW credits – to complement the purification process. As villagers perform SDG-aligned activities, they are granted RAINBOW credits that they can redeem for a specific amount of clean drinking water. The bartering exchange offers households the ability to install bamboo-based drainage cleaning systems to become net-zero, allowing them to earn up to 1,000 liters of clean drinking water. Communities have taken up many locally needed social impact initiatives, such as setting up a unique bamboo garbage bin solution – separating plastic, e-waste, paper, glass, and kitchen waste – for more RAINBOW credits in return. Extra RAINBOW credits can be exchanged for quality-of-life improvements such as bamboo furniture and utility products, further promoting eco-centric development. Water Bank Foundation has partnered with the National Bamboo Mission (NBM), Government of India for the training and capacity building of bamboo products in local communities. These water banks are energized by the solar power of HUSK Power for pumping and automation for monitoring & control. At the community scale, the solution is easily affordable to local civic bodies (panchayats, municipalities, talukas) budgets, with or without support from CSR funds.
The uniqueness behind BarterWATER is rooted in its integration of avant-garde technologies to build an eco-centric economy. The Organic Aqua Solutions (OAS) technology, a patented water purification system licensed from IIT-Kharagpur research division, removes harmful contaminants like arsenic, mercury, and lead from drinking water. While the IoT-based Tap@App device enables real-time monitoring and control of water quality and usage, these technologies have been tied into an AI-powered RAINBOW credit system for villagers who engage in sustainable development actions and eco-friendly practices.
Despite the immense potential of the BarterWATER model, many initially doubted the feasibility of the solution. However, people have rapidly embraced the model with very enthusiastic support from volunteers and villagers. Increasing numbers of people are now standing in line to access clean water and participate in eco-friendly practices as well. It’s the evolution of a sustainable future.
♦ Robust technology to address critical water contamination like arsenic, lead, and other heavy metals.
♦ By using the OAS, people living in critical habitats will get short-term and long-term health benefits up to almost 80%.
♦ The drastic reduction in the cost per liter water filtration (almost 10 times than other
popular options) will ensure affordability and availability
♦ OAS will be a substitute for RO technology

Building on promising success, BarterWATER aims to strengthen its processes through backward integration as well as data and machine learning to enhance monitoring and predict changes in water quality and behaviour change of the local community. BarterWATER also plans to expand its bartering exchange to include waste management, rainwater harvesting, kitchen gardens, waste-to-energy, ethical education, and other sustainable development initiatives. Finally, WHEELS Global Foundation is encouraging all IIT alumni to leverage their vast ecosystem of environmental leaders and sustainability experts to promote BarterWATER’s innovative and scalable model to more communities across India. In doing so, WGF and WBF hope to increase access to clean drinking water and promote community engagement in sustainable and eco-friendly actions.
